Fridge Compressor Issues: Specific Problems

In part one of this two-part blog series, we looked at some of the basics on your refrigerator’s compressor, why it’s important, and some possible signs that it could be malfunctioning or having issues. Fridge compressors are the “heart” of the fridge, serving as the component that compresses gas to absorb heat and keep the fridge cold, and keeping them in proper working order at all times is important.

At All Pro Appliance Service, we’re happy to offer the very best appliance repair services you’ll find around Salt Lake City, including refrigerator repair of any kind. We’ve helped clients with a variety of fridge concerns, including compressor issues. While part one of our series went over basics of the compressor and signs of issues, today’s part two will look more closely at specific compressor issues that could be taking place, plus how to prevent them in the first place and what our team will do to remedy them.

Compressor Overload

Likely the most common refrigerator compressor problem is when it’s overloaded and stops working properly. This can cause temperature changes in both the fridge and freezer, including melting or freezing food that shouldn’t be.

Several factors might be causing this, from issues with the condenser fan or dirty coils to simple wear-and-tear on the compressor itself. In addition to affecting your groceries, an overloaded compressor will use more energy and increase your utility bills.

If this is the cause of your issue, our team will look to find the underlying reason for the overload. They will check areas like coils, fan, and thermostat to see if any components need repair or replacement.

Malfunctioning Parts

In other cases, one or more parts of the compressor may be malfunctioning and causing issues. Common culprits here include the start relay, overload protector, or capacitor. Again, our team will inspect all of these areas during a repair job to ensure their proper function.

This is one strong example of why appliance repair professionals are so valuable here. Mechanical issues in the compressor are very difficult to identify if you don’t have experience with them. Our team, on the other hand, has seen every potential compressor issue and will know exactly where to look for solutions.

Electrical Problems

Another possible cause of compressor issues is electrical problems. This could include shorts in the wiring or power supply, which can prevent the compressor from receiving the necessary amount of electricity to function correctly.

Our team will carefully examine all electrical components, including fuses and breakers, during repair jobs to ensure they are not contributing to any compressor issues.

Ventilation Issues

Finally, because compressors need to release the heat they generate when compressing gas, proper ventilation is key. If your fridge is not getting enough airflow or if the ventilation system is clogged with debris, the compressor could overheat and malfunction.

Our team will check for any ventilation issues and clean out any debris that may be blocking airflow to prevent future compressor problems.
