Freezer Leaking Water: Defrost, Temp Control, Door Seal

In part one of this two-part blog series, we looked at some of the possible reasons why your freezer might be leaking water. This is never a desirable outcome, and there might be a few different culprits at play – and also a few different levels of severity depending on what the issue is.

At All Pro Appliance Service, we’re proud to offer numerous forms of HVAC and appliance repair, including freezer repair and assistance with numerous other fixtures in your home. While part one of our series went over things like poor food arrangement, drain pan cracks and drain hole congestion issues, today’s part two will look at some other possible causes of freezers leaking water, plus what you or our team will need to do about them.

You’re Using the Defrost Feature Too Often

While utilizing your freezer’s defrost feature can be great for keeping your appliance clean and running at its peak efficiency, overusing it could end up causing a leak. Defrosting too often might mean that you’re not giving the freezer enough time to adequately freeze the water in between uses.

If this is happening, part of the melted ice will likely overflow, resulting in puddles on the floor. This can be easily prevented by giving your freezer adequate time between uses of the defrost feature and not using it too often.

Temperature Control Malfunctions

In other cases, your freezer may be leaking water due to an issue with the temperature control settings. If this is happening, the thermostat might not be accurately sensing and regulating the temperature of the appliance, leading it to frost up and then defrost too often. This can also lead to a buildup of condensation that eventually finds its way out of your freezer’s door.

The good news is that this issue can be easily taken care of by making sure your temperature control settings are accurate. If the problem persists, it might be a sign of a larger issue and you should contact our team for further assistance and repair services.

Door Seal Damage

Finally, another potential reason why your freezer may be leaking water is due to damage to the door seal. If it’s broken, worn, or just in general need of a replacement, it won’t close properly and can lead to condensation buildup which eventually leaks out from the bottom of the door.

If this is happening, we usually suggest replacing the door seal as soon as possible to prevent further water damage. Fortunately, this is a simple and inexpensive repair that can be easily handled by our team of experienced technicians.
