Extending Furnace Lifespan: Thermostat, Use, Pros

In part one of this two-part blog series, we looked at some basics on how to extend your furnace’s lifespan and get the absolute most out of this vital home HVAC component. From ensuring proper seasonal maintenance to changing your air filters regularly and more, there are several simple ways to keep your furnace working in top order for many years to come.

At All Pro Appliance Service, we’re here to offer a wide range of AC repair and furnace repair services to clients around Salt Lake City, in addition to numerous other appliance repair solutions we provide as well. Today’s part two of our series will go over some other simple ways to maximize furnace lifespan, whether on your own or with help from our HVAC contractor professionals wherever needed.

Consider Thermostat Upgrades

If your home is still using a manual thermostat – meaning one you physically adjust on the wall – you may want to strongly consider upgrading to a programmable or even smart thermostat. These models are designed to help save money on energy bills by making sure your furnace (or any other HVAC system) isn’t running when it doesn’t need to be, including during times when you’re not home or during milder weather. They can also be controlled remotely through your smartphone, making it easier to adjust the temperature without having to physically be at home.

Don’t Block Vents or Registers

One common mistake homeowners make that drives up furnace strain: Blocking vents or registers around the home, whether intentionally or unintentionally. This could mean furniture, rugs or other items are placed over them, or even that the vents themselves are closed off. This will make your furnace work much harder than it needs to and can significantly decrease its lifespan over time. Make sure all vents and registers are unobstructed and open for proper air flow.

Utilize Ceiling Fans

You may not realize it, but ceiling fans can actually be a useful tool when it comes to maximizing your furnace’s lifespan. During the winter months, they can be set to spin in reverse to help push warm air down and circulate it around the room. This will make it feel warmer without having to turn up the heat, taking some strain off your furnace and helping it last longer.

Call for Professional Assistance

Finally, if you’re ever unsure about any of the above tips or simply want professional assistance to ensure optimal furnace lifespan, we’re here to help.
